Movie Review: Religulous

October 6, 2008

Went to ye olde movie haus this weekend for the first time in a long time.  Jesi and I decided to see Religulous, the new Bill Maher commentary on religion.

Let me start off by saying this, If you are a devout follower of any of the big 3-4 major religious doctrines on our planet, you will probably not like this movie.  In fact, it might make you violently ill.  However, barring that, let’s say you are one of the 16% of Americans that hold no religious beliefs, or maybe you only go to church/temple/mosque out of habit and so as not to upset your sainted mother.  This movie is for you. I haven’t laughed out loud in a movie theatre that much in a VERY long time.  It’s funny just as Borat was funny, pointing out ridiculousness in the common man, only with less naked man-wrestling.  This is unsurprising as apparently it is brought to us by the same director as Borat.

The movie is an A+, but the last few minutes do get a little preachy, which is extremely ironic considering the subject matter.  Bill Maher has this grand Call to Action for Agnostics, Atheists, and Nihilists everywhere.  “Rise up against your oppressors!”  But, as we all know, Nihilists are cowards, Donny.

Chalk it up to good writing

May 27, 2007

Pardon the hilarious pun in the title of this post, but I have to give all my loyal readers another movie recommendation. This weeks entry goes to Chalk. It’s a faux documentary (think The Office) that follows a few first and second year teachers in Texas. In fact it was written and directed by a few former teachers from the Austin area and it was filmed down there as well. Jesi and I just happened to accidentally go to the screening of this film at the Magnolia and the directors and one of the actors were there to answer questions right after the film. Pretty nifty. Anyway, go see it so it can be released to more theatres. Seriously. Go. Now.

That’s what she said

Since we’re not going to talk about the Mavs game ever again, it’s a good thing I have something to blog about.

Yes folks, the official Dwight Schrute Bobblehead from NBC’s The Office. Stare in amazement at it’s bobbleheadedness.

Also, check out my entire line of desk ornaments. From left to right: The Rock, No Ho Han, Dwight Schrute, Laynce Nix(of the Frisco Rough Riders), Juwan Howard, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and of course, my Fast.

Them Thar Hills Be Lookin’ At Us

Last night, Aaron and I ventured off to Loews Cityplace to check out the remake of Wes Craven’s “The Hills Have Eyes“. Now, I haven’t seen the original, but apparently it starred the lead singer from Midnight Oil:

Hills Have Eyes Poster

As far as the new movie is concerned however, I can tell you the first half is just great. Scary? check. Gory? check. Disfigured mutants? check.

In the second half, they really turn up the cheese factor to 11. And honestly, I didn’t mind. It’s a real crowd pleaser. The kind of movie where yelling at the screen is not limited to just the black women. And every gory demise of a mutant is met with applause and cheers.

Oh, and I almost forgot. Claire‘s in it too. And boy, does she get the short end of the stick.

Overall, I wouldn’t say The Hills Have Eyes is a ‘must-see’, but it was satisfying enough for me to recommend if you’re looking for a gory slasher flick to snuggle up to for a lonely night of sleeping with the lights on.

I give it a 4 . . . . . . . . . . . out of 5. (nerdy video game tv show reference. God, i’m lame.)

Everybody Hates Hugo

Tonight was a great episode of Lost. We had good friends, good brews, and good boar! Yes, that’s right. I finally got around to cooking some boar for a Lost party!

I also had the chance to contribute to the famed LostCast podcast. W00t!
